  professor Lotfi Asghar Zadeh

Professor Lotfi Asghar Zadeh, an originally Iranian scientist, who is better known in academia as "Zadeh" is the innovator of fuzzy logic. He was born in 1921 in Bakou in Azerbaijan republics. His father was an Iranian journalist who lived in Bakou because of his job and his mother was a Russian doctor.

When he was ten because of the widespread famine and consequent starvation, accompanying his family he moved to his paternal home land, Iran. He obtained his diploma from “Alborz” high school, a distinguished school in Tehran. In national entrance exam of engineering department of Tehran university he came second. He graduated in electrical engineering in 1942 and during the second world war he went to America to continue his education. He managed to get his master degree from technical university of Masachuset in 1946.

Then in 1949, he earned a PhD. Degree from Colombia university and started teaching subjects related to “system theory” over there. Afterwards, in 1959 professor Zadeh started his full time job as a professor at the faculty electrical engineering of California university in Berkeley. In 1963 first in electrical engineering and then in computer science he became a full professor. He was the president of the faculty of electrical engineering in California university from 1963 to 1968.

As a matter of fact, before working on the fuzzy sets theory, professor Zadeh was a leading figure in “control theory”. In early 1960s he realized that classical control theory was far too concentrated on accuracy and hence is not compatible with complex systems. In 1965 he published his views in a paper titled “fuzzy sets”. Although professor Zadeh got retired in 1991, he is still continuing his scientific work in California university and is constantly participating in conferences and seminars and he keeps delivering lectures.

Now, professor Zadeh as a recognized professor in electrical engineering manages the software computer center in Berkeley university. This center has 2000 members and 100 scientific institutes are affiliated to it.

Professor Zadeh has obtained 14 honorary PhD degrees from different prestigious universities worldwide. He has more than 200 papers in his scientific record. He is also the consultant in many editorial boards of different scientific journals worldwide.

Dr.ZAdeh has received different awards and medals. To name a few we can include the following:
